Beef Pie

This recipe is a very old one. My Jenny fuimaa from London had cooked it for us and from that time it has been our favourite. My nieces have a standing order for this pie when they pack food to take back to their universities. Ingredients:
  1. 1 lb sirloin beef cut into small pieces
  2. 1 small onion diced
  3. 1 small tomato diced
  4. 1/4 green pepper diced
  5. 1/4 cup yogurt
  6. 1 tsp garlic
  7. 1 tsp ginger
  8. 1 tbsp tomato paste
  9. Pinch of tumeric
  10. Red Chilli Powder to taste
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 1/2 cup water
  13. Spaghetti (1/4 bag), broken into 1/4s, boiled in salt water
  14. Bag of chips/crisps (Lays, Miss Vickies, Sticks, any regular flavoured chips will do) crushed
  15. Ketchup as garnish

Method:

  • Put together ingredients from 1 - 11 in pressure cooker or in a pot with 1/2 cup water. Cook until done. Should not be watery or too dry - just moist.
  • Cook spaghetti in salt water until done.
  • Layer dish first with cooked meat mixture, then cooked spaghetti and crushed chips/crisps on top. Then again with meat mixture, spaghetti and the crushed chips/crisps.
  • Decorate it by squeezing ketchup in a swirl or zigzag on top of the chips/crisps.
  • Can be eaten as is or with bread.

Enjoy.

Meat Pies II

This recipe is for kids who do not like onions. Filling Ingredients:
  1. 1lb lean mince meat
  2. 1 tsp garlic
  3. 1 tsp ginger
  4. Black pepper (according to your taste)
  5. Salt (according to your taste)
  6. Pinch of garam masala
  7. 1/2 fresh lime

Butter Puff Pastry (President's Choice)

1 beaten egg for brushing

Method:

  • Cook mince meat with ginger and garlic until done - and no lumps.
  • Add salt & pepper according to taste.
  • Cool meat and add garam masala and lime juice to the mixture.

My mom used to make the pastry from scratch, however, due to time constraints, she uses Butter Puff Pastry which is sold at Loblaws - President Choice brand. It contains 2 pre-rolled 10" x 10" sheets.

  • Divide one sheet into 9 squares.
  • Roll out each square to make it bigger...my mom's says it is easier to roll out small squares then one big one.
  • Add a tbsp of the above mixture to each square.
  • Take the opposite corner of the square and fold over to make a triangle.
  • Using a fork, press it down along the edges to lock in the filling.
  • Place them on a greased pan.
  • Brush them with a beaten egg.
  • Pre-heat oven to 325F and bake them for about 20 mins or till golden brown.

Enjoy.
